Web site move

Our web site will shortly be moving to a new hosting provider. Initially the existing site will be carried across unchanged, but this move provides us with an opportunity to redesign the site, incorporating new features and site management tools that should allow us to make the site more dynamic and easier to use. Watch this space! And in the meantime, if you notice any problems, or have suggestions for the new site, please contact Richard.

Autumn 2013 programme published

Our autumn programme has been loaded to our web site and can be downloaded from the Calendar page. With the evenings drawing in the focus shifts from summer evening walks to indoor activities including film and theatre visits, and a quiz evening to exercise your memory powers! We'll still be out at weekends, though, with a cycle ride and walks locally and our traditional pre-Christmas weekend away, this time at the recently-opened hostel at Losehill. Newcomers are always welcome, so please do come along.

Being green - hack and burn!

One of the things that brings us together as a group is a shared love of the countryside and being out in it. So in recent years we've tried to "put something back" in a concrete way by doing some volunteer work for the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. This time around we were at Hem Heath, where our task was to help cut down rhododendrons. It's easy to think that woodlands are wild places, and as such should just be left to themselves, but in fact the Trust actively manages this and other woodland sites, to encourage native plants and animals to thrive. The rhododendron, although it has a lovely flower, is an invasive non-native plant, and needs to be kept in check.

And we won't deny either, that we enjoyed being lumberjacks for a day.

Autumn programme published

Our autumn 2011 programme is now available for download from our Calendar page. It's in PDF format, so if you don't already have a copy of Acrobat Reader, or other software that can display a PDF file, you'll need to download and install it (there's a link to Acrobat reader on the Calendar page too).

This programme includes our 21st birthday party, which will take place at the Leopard in Burslem, as well as a full programme of walks, talks, and more. This year's Christmas weekend will be at Castleton Youth Hostel.

Please take a look and come along to whatever events interest you!

POG is 21!

POG is celebrating its 21st birthday this year. We are planning a special weekend later in the year where all our current and former members will be welcome to join us to mark this milestone. Watch out for more information here and in the autumn programme when it's published in late August/early September.

Cadbury Cup

As winners of last year's event, POG hosted the Cadbury Cup this time round. Eleven teams converged on the Ravenstor base on what turned out to be a fine weekend for walking - dry, but not too warm. The course we'd set turned out to be challenging but not impossible, so probably about right - three teams completed the route in the alloted time. The winners were Bristol, so congratulations to them, and we'll look forward to visiting their patch next year!

Autumn programme now on line

The programme of events is now available on the Calendar page of our web site: http://www.potteriesoutdoorgroup.org.uk/calendar

We have a good selection of day walks, including both flat and a little more challenging, and as usual we'll be off for our pre-Christmas weekend at a hostel. Last year we had beautiful snow and sunshine (check out the pictures via the Gallery page!) . If you can't make that, do come along to our New Year walk, another traditional favourite.
